The Myth Of Hades And Persephone

The myth of Hades and Persephone is one of the well known Greek myths.

Hades was the brother of Zeus and the god of the underworld.

Persephone was the daughter of Demeter, the Goddess of nature.

The myth of Hades and Persephone is one more myth of love and abduction in the Greek mythology.

Hades And Persephone: The Beginning Of The Myth

Hades fell in love with Persephone and decided to kidnap her. The myth says that in one of the rare times he left the Underworld, he traveled above ground to pursue her, while she was gathering flowers in a field.

One day Hades, God of the Underworld, saw Persephone and instantly fell in love with her.

Week 14 – Goddess Knowledge – Persephone

(This week I went through the deck to find this Goddess’ card because she is very important to why we have the warmer weather and a time when plants, flowers, trees, etc have time to grow into abundance for our food and herbs for magickal and medicinal needs. She is also important to why we have colder months when nothing will grow outdoors. This goddess is part of an ancient Greek tale that includes her mother, Demeter, and the god of the Underworld Hades. I will write posts with more information on Demeter and Hades which will follow after what the “Goddess Knowledge Card” has to say about Persephone.)

PERSEPHONE

Although Persephone is best known as Demeter’s daughter, the maiden who was abducted by Hades, lord of the underworld, the Greek version of her reflects the usurpation of female mysteries by a patriarchal mythology. In this version Persephone personifies the kore, the maiden aspect of the goddess. Her myth exemplifies the cycles of nature, for when Persephone is underground, plants do not bloom, and when she returns to earth, spring ensues.

Persephone is the goddess of the soul, for it is in the darkness of the underworld (analogous to the unconscious) that the soul is formed. In the Orphic mysteries, Persephone granted wisdom to the initiate, for she is the goddess of a dark, uncomfortable wisdom, a goddess of dark and frightening power. Persephone represents the ability to rule over the aspects of ourselves that are terrifying in the extreme.

EVERYONE:  Please light the God candle
We will now begin our rituals … Beginning with the Northern Hemisphere. Southern Hemisphere, please wait until you are prompted.

NORTHERN HEMISPHERE

ADEPT DRUANTIA: At this time and in this place between worlds, we are gathered here, not only in honor of the Mother but also in honor of the Goddess Ostara. Just as she heralds the end of the dark phase of the year, so too do we release the dark within. Just as she signifies the awakening of the light phase, so too do we summon new growth and renewed energy.
EVERYONE: Please take one piece of paper and write down one to three things you wish to release (eg. I release all fears, I release my addiction to smoking, I release anger, I release guilt, I release depression, etc). If you have more than one thing, space them apart so that you can tear them off as you need to burn them. Once you have written it/them down, light the black candle. Spend 2 minutes concentrating on releasing the problem[s].
Then visualize it/them being attached to your body by a black cord. Individually put each problem into a bubble of white light and see a pair of scissors cutting the cord at the base to that attachment.  See the balloon of light flying off into the distance with your problem inside until it completely disappears. Do this with each separate problem, and as each is being released, light the paper in the candle flame one at a time, if you have more than one. Once burning well, throw into the heatproof bowl or cauldron and leave it to burn completely. You will have three minutes to burn the piece or pieces of paper.
Once you are finished type in DONE.
Now pick up the other piece of paper and write down one thing you would like to embrace or manifest in your life (eg: I embrace abundance and prosperity, I  embrace full mind, body, spirit wellness, I embrace good Luck, I embrace career success, I embrace happiness etc). Once you are done, place the paper down and pick up the crystal. Hold the crystal and concentrate on your desire. See it as it has already happened. Spend 2 minutes meditating upon your desire. Then place the crystal down with the paper underneath it
Once you are finished type in DONE
Now we will do the Southern Hemisphere. Northern hemisphere please be patient.

SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE

ADEPT DRUANTIA: At this time and in this place between worlds, we are gathered here, not only in honor of the Greenman but also in honor of the God Mabon. Just as he heralds the end of the light phase of the year, so too do we acknowledge the need for rest and retreat. Just as he signifies the coming of the dark phase of the year, so too do we plant seeds for positive new growth.
EVERYONE: Please take up one piece of paper and write down one to three things you wish to release (eg. I release all fears, I release my addiction to smoking, I release anger, I release guilt, I release depression etc). If you have more than one thing, space them apart so that you can tear them off as you need to burn them. Once you have written it/them down, light the black candle. Spend 2 minutes concentrating on releasing the problem[s]. Visualize each individual problem being attached by a black cord. Put the problem into a bubble of white light and see a pair of scissors cutting the cord at the base of this attachment. See the balloon of light flying off into the distance, with your problem inside until it completely disappears. Do this with each separate problem and as each is being released, light the paper in the candle flame one at a time if you have more than one. Once burning well, throw into the heatproof bowl or cauldron and allow to burn completely. You have three minutes to do this.
Once you are finished, type DONE.
Now take up the other piece of paper and write down one thing you would like to embrace or manifest (eg. I embrace abundance and prosperity, I embrace full mind, body, spirit wellness, I embrace good luck, I embrace career success, I embrace happiness etc). Once you are done, place the paper down and pick up the crystal. Hold the crystal and concentrate on your desire. See it as it has already happened. Spend 2 minutes meditating on your desire.
When finished, type DONE
THE OFFERING
EVERYONE: Please place your chalice in the center of your altar or on your pentacle. Hold your hands above the chalice and allow the light within you to flow from your heart and down your arms. See it flowing out of your hands and into the chalice. See the chalice glowing with light. Then raise it up high toward the Moon and say-
Dear Goddess and God, I offer you this drink as a token of my gratitude. Honor to thee  Oh Old Ones!”.
Then take a drink of the beverage and put the chalice back on the altar in its original place.
Next, move your offering plate to the center of your altar or onto your pentacle and hold your hands above it. Allow the light within to flow forth and down into the food. Once you have filled it with light, raise it up toward the Sun[or imaginary Sun] and say-
Dear Goddess and God, I offer you this food as a token of my gratitude. Honor to thee Oh Old Ones!
Then eat a bite of the food and place the plate back on the altar in its original place. Take a minute to finish your bite and then type DONE.
We thank the Old Ones for the food and drink they provide for us daily.
DISMISSING THE GOD AND GODDESS
O  Great Cernunnos, Lord of the Wildwood and all it encompasses, we thank you for honoring us with your presence and aid. Between two worlds, was magick made. Great Lord, we bid you Hail and Farewell !”
O Great Danu Mother of both Earth and Moon, we thank you for honoring us with your presence and aid. Between two worlds was magick made. Great Lady, we bid you Hail and Farewell !”
Now please visualize the God and Goddess going their separate ways, back to from whence they came. Then spend a moment releasing any energy you have retained. You can either bend down and touch the Earth or send it off to someone that is in need of healing. Either way, feel it and see it leaving your arms and going to its destination either deep in the earth to be absorbed and transformed or off to help someone. Once it has left you, stand up again.

Guardians of the Watchtowers of the East, Powers of Air, we thank you for your protection and presence and give you leave to depart our circle. Hail and Farewell!”

***After this ritual, please take the ashes outside and toss or blow to the four winds.Allow the black spell candle to burn down , but make sure it is in a safe place or transfer it to a bath tub or sink. The crystal should be placed in a window  that gets both sun and moon and set on top of your piece of paper. Leave it there for one Full Moon cycle.Your desire should have manifested by then…

WEEK 12 – Goddess Knowledge – The Bird Goddess/Valkyrie

The Bird Goddess is one of the most ancient goddesses, both a living-giving creator and goddess of death and regeneration. The Valkyrie, a northern European goddess, is a representation of this goddess as death wielder, The bird guise of the Valkyrie is that of a raven, long associated with death and magic. The name Valkyrie means “chooser of the slain”; the face and form of the Valkyrie are the last thing a person sees before death, Valkyries are the psychopomps who lead the soul to the afterworld. For ancient people death was part of a cyclical process leading again to rebirth; black was a positive color, a symbol of fertility and abundance, The Valkyrie represents that part of us that is unafraid of dark places; she can lead into and through them. She reminds us that seeds germinate in the darkness, that sometimes we need darkness in order to grow.

The Eleusinian Mysteries: An Unresolved Ancient Greek Puzzle

To this day the Eleusinian mysteries remains a subject enveloped by broken pieces of information, creating great controversy among historians who work under heavy assumptions while trying to puzzle out this ancient tradition. Complete details involving the rites and celebrations which took place during the mysteries were marked by a sworn oath of secrecy by the initiated and, therefore, vanished from our knowledge. In that respect, what do we know about the mysteries and what are the speculations involving it? Although modern Historians still argue about different aspects regarding this mystic ritual, some ideas are often accepted among them, which are understood by the testimonials of the initiated.

In Ancient Greece, the town of Eleusis, situated west of Athens, became the most important religious center of the pagan world during its time. According to the old belief and relates in the Homeric Hymn, Demeter (goddess of agriculture) stopped to rest at Eleusis during her quest for her daughter, Persephone, who was kidnaped by Hades. There, Demeter ordered a temple and altar to be built in her honor. After the joyful reunion of the goddess with the missing Persephone, she instructed the leaders of Eleusis in how to perform her rites. The cult, then, is believed to have been taught directly by Demeter herself.

The Magical Uses of Plants: 23 Sacred Herbs for Health, Prosperity and Spiritual Protection

Caption from picture “herbs can do so much more than just add flavor to foods and improve health. they also have magical uses that can help you expand spirituality and do intensely practical things like create more success, prosperity and protection for negative influences.”

Generally, a plant referred to as an herb possesses some sort of medicinal, culinary, or magical value. Botanists and gardeners sometimes differentiate herbs from other plants by the stem: if the plant has a “woody” stem above the ground, it’s not an herb but a tree or a shrub. According to this definition, mint is an herb, but rosemary is not.

In the magical and spiritual world, however, the term “herb” is used as a catchall for bits of trees, flowers, spices, and all sorts of plants. Herbs thus form a huge portion of the green witch’s practice. Following the herbs, you’ll find some miscellaneous greens that are also useful (though often overlooked). The following list comprises some aromatic, culinary and magical plants and herbs.

1. Allspice (Pimenta officinalis)

Also known as pimento or Jamaica pepper, the dried allspice berry is a common staple in the kitchen spice rack. Called “allspice” because it incorporates flavors such as clove, cinnamon, and pepper, it is a common flavoring for spice cookies. The sweet yet spicy aroma is released when the dried berry is crushed. Allspice berries make wonderful additions to magical herbal blends for money and prosperity and any magic focusing on increasing energy, love, healing, and luck.

Where to Get It: Organic Allspice Powder

2. Angelica (Angelica archangelica)

Also known as archangel or angel’s herb, this fragrant plant has been used throughout the centuries for improving digestion, flavoring wines and liqueurs, and making candy. It is particularly powerful when this magic herb is used for protection and purification.

Where to Get It: Organic Angelica Root Extract

3. Basil (Ocimum basilicum)

Also known as sweet basil and St. Joseph’s Wort, basil is commonly found in spice racks and in kitchen gardens all over Europe and the Americas. It is extremely versatile in the culinary arts and is an excellent all-purpose magical herb as well. Basil is used for prosperity, success, peace, protection, happiness, purification, tranquility, and love.

Southern Hemisphere- Lammas

Setting up you alter ready for the feast

Basket of grain heads

Fruits and seeds of choice

Corn dolly if you choose

1 X orange candle

Bread and cider to feast

Lammas in the S.H-

As the day marking the first harvest of early grain, this is a good time to bake your own bread. The loaf that is broken and shared in the name of the Goddess.

This is a time of great change that needs to take place in one’s life.

The Great God gives his energy to the crops to ensure life, while the Great Goddess prepares to enter Her Crone aspect, the Great God slowly loses his strength and it’s a time for the days to grow shorter.

If you are in the Southern Hemisphere you may want to decorate your alter with grains and wheat, husks and freshly baked breads, corn dollies and fruit.

Lammas in the S.H-

  • Now is the time to light your orange candle

Take a handful of grain and face the East, the land of the rising Sun God.

And Say

Now let us honour the Goddess in all of her fullness. Because of her nurturing we are blessed with the fruitfulness and the Divine Gods energy wanes. As the mother of all nature, we love and adore her with fullest honour and are in reverence that she chooses to share her power of beneficence.

Now:

Rub the grains in your hands and allow them to fall on the ground or on your alter cloth.

Take a piece of fruit, taste it and appreciate and saviour its flavour.

And Say:

“As the energies of the Goddess become ours, we are one with the fruits of the harvest. Hail Great and Divine Goddess of the Moon, Great Mother of all creation, and Hail to the Sun Lord and light our path with your pure light of goodness. May all your harvests be bountiful.”

Everyone-

Feast on the fruit and seeds.

2 Minute Meditation

Spend some time meditating on the sense of community bought about in the sharing of the fruits of the land.

Think about the bounty that fills your life. What are you getting ready to harvest? Have you taken time over the summer to enjoy the fruits of your labour? How are you preparing to shift into the darkness of the coming months?

FAREWELL

Lammas in the S.H-

Now say-

Brighid, Goddess of Healing, Goddess of Smith craft, Goddess of Inspiration, I thank You for Your presence and Your blessings. May there be peace and honor between us now and forever. Hail and farewell.”

Ancestors of blood and ancestors of spirit, I thank you for your presence and your blessings. May there be peace and honor between us now and forever. Hail and farewell.”

Spirits of the land, spirits of this place, I thank you for your presence and your blessings. May there be peace and honor between us now and forever. Hail and farewell.”

At the end of the ceremony please feel free to feast on your cider and bread.

After the ceremony:

If you wish to burn your candle in safety please do so, or snuff out and light over the next few days enjoying this transition of seasons.

Continue to feast on the bounties that have been gifted by the Great Mother and Father, and finally please dispose of anything sacred or not finished in an appropriate way, with a blessing and back to the great Mother with respect. Honour her with the greatest respect and show your gratitude! The Great Goddess is here for everyone!

Week 7 – Goddess Knowledge – Eagle Woman

Despite the fact that the life-giving and death-wielding Bird Goddess is one of the oldest representations of the goddess, eagles have usually been linked with the masculine, with a few exceptions (the Sphinx of Egypt had the wings of an eagle, and the Aztec goddess Cihuacoatl was also called Eagle Woman). This Eagle Woman shows a new marriage of the feminine and the eagle. SHe represents all an eagle stands for: spirit, valor, majesty, renewal, accuracy of sight, spiritual aim, and the ability to soar to the heights. She also holds in her hands a vessel, the traditional symbol for the feminine, for that which receives, contains, and nourishes. Here both sets of values are joined, emblematic of a different combinations of strengths that are part of women-born.

Eagle Woman is a joyful affirmation of our ability to break out of millennia-old stereotypes and find new definition the embraces our entire continuum of being alive. She teaches the women can express qualities of the eagle while continuing to contain and nurture.

A Meteor Struck the Moon During Sunday’s Total Eclipse

It may be the first time that such an event was documented from Earth

smithsonian.com

The “super blood wolf moon” that lit up the night sky on Sunday marked the rare convergence of three lunar events: the January full moon, known as a “wolf moon,” appeared especially large because it was positioned unusually close to Earth, hence the “super,” and a total lunar eclipse caused the celestial body to glow a deep crimson—or “blood” red, if you will. While this spectacular phenomena was ongoing, yet another special event occurred: a meteor collided with the moon and sparked a powerful flash that could be seen from Earth.

According to Scientific American’s Nadia Drake, this may mark the first time that a meteor strike has been observed during a total lunar eclipse. On the night of the super blood wolf moon, a Reddit user reported seeing the flash on multiple webcasts, and social media was soon filled with images and input from other people who said they caught the meteor collision. Eventually, Jose Maria Madiedo, an astronomer at Spain’s University of Huelva, confirmed on Twitter that the “impact flash has been recorded by telescopes operating in the framework of MIDAS Survey from Europe.

The Importance of Grounding Excess Energy After Doing a Spell or Ritual

During any type of magickal workings there is energy that is unused to complete it. This energy, especially if it is allowed to build up over time can cause minor or major problems usually with electronic devices. So grounding the extra energy every single time you do a spell and/or ritual whether you are doing inside or outside of a sacred circle must be grounded to Mother Earth. She should be told the energy is here to use however it will help her. You should also do this anytime you cast a circle for any reason.

To ground the excess energy raise your hands palm facing downward, as far as you can than slowly bring them down until you touch the ground of outside of the floor inside. If you cannot bring your hand all the way down bring them.as close to the ground or floor as you can and then imagine the energy being pushed down from that level into Mother Earth.

Wether you are working alone as a Solitary or in a Coven this is a very important piece of the spell.and/or ritual to especially when I’m your home.

I have a sister who had practiced for a few years grounding the extra energy only when she felt like it which was not that often. One  day many years ago we were talking about witch stuff and she was explaining  some problems she was having with the lights on her altar along with the fact her desktop computer, which was in the same room wasn’t working right at all and no scans could find anything wrong. After explaining the importance of grounding she did a major grounding of the built up excess energy over the years including grounding herself. The next day her computer and lights in the room started working right again.

When I forget to ground excess energy, we all can for her sometimes, after doing a quick spell in my den which is also the room I use as my sacred space/altar room, it builds up and starts blowing up light bulbs somewhere in my home. So try not to let this happen very often, replacing light bulbs can be expensive…lol Even after lighting and putting out an empowered I ground this excess energy. I have a healing candle that I normally light daily to help with my fibromyalgia pain, so I ground excess energy almost every day. Yes sometime I for get to do it after I put the candle out and if I have not done anything else like a spell, ritual of a circle for some reason it does not cause me a problem but if I do not ground the excess energy after lighting the candle two days it will cause some  type of electrical problem in my, as I really  refer to it, witch cave, will.happen or in the bathroom that you enter into through my witch cave.

Besides feeding your intention in to your the other very important thing is to always ground excess energy as soon as your magical work is done. If you are working in a circle ground the excess energy before opening the circle.
