Statues of the Egyptian Goddess Sekhmet Unearthed

Numerous Statues of Sekhmet, The Lioness Goddess of War, Unearthed in Egypt

A team of Egyptian archaeologists excavating the Mortuary Temple of King Amenhotep III in Luxor, a city in southern Egypt and the capital of Luxor Governorate, have brought to the surface an impressive number of statues of the goddess Sekhmet, daughter of the ancient Egyptian sun god Re.

The Significance of the Goddess Sekhmet in Ancient Egyptian Religion

The lion-headed goddess Sekhmet , also known as Sakhmet or Sekhet, was a member of the Memphite Triad, thought to be the wife of Ptah and mother of Nefertem. Linked with war and retribution, she was believed to use arrows to kill her enemies with fire, her breath being the hot desert wind as her body took on the glare of the midday sun. She often represented the destructive force of the sun as well. According to the Egyptian legends, she came into being when Hathor was sent to earth by Ra to take vengeance on man. She was the one who slaughtered mankind and drank their blood, only being stopped by trickery. However, being mother of Nefertem, who himself was a healing god, gave her a more protective side that manifested itself in her aspect of goddess of healing and surgery. The priests of Sekhmet were specialists in the field of medicine, arts linked to ritual and magic. They were also trained surgeons of remarkable caliber. According to many historians, this is the main reason King Amenhotep III had so many statues of Sekhmet surrounding him, as he was suffering from many health problems and he hoped the goddess may cure him; a theory that is verified by Mahmoud Afifi, head of the Ancient Egyptian Antiquities Department at the Ministry of Antiquities, who claimed that the many statues of the goddess in the temple of Amenhotep III were possibly intended to protect the ruler from evil and disease.

The Statues Have a Great Historical and Artistic Value

German Egyptologist and the project director Hourig Sourouzian, who also discovered fourteen statues made of black granite portraying the Lionhead goddess Sekhmet back in 2013, told Ahram Online , “They are of great artistic quality”. The statues were …

A New Egyptian Sphinx is Found

Surprise Discovery of 4,000-Year-Old Egyptian Sphinx with Human Head and Lion Body

Local authorities in Egypt have announced the discovery of an ancient sphinx statue between two of the best known ancient temples in the country – Karnak and Luxor. The discovery was made by chance, during a restoration project, and stunned the construction workers who found it. There have been very few sphinxes discovered in modern times and the find will add to our knowledge of Egyptian sculpture and art. The sphinx will also raise questions as to what else may be found in the area and which Pharaoh the statue represents.

Sphinx Mythology

Sphinxes are common in many mythologies, including Ancient Greece. They are usually portrayed as having human heads, with the bodies of a lion and are sometimes depicted as winged. In Egyptian mythology, they are often portrayed as benevolent and strong and they are usually associated with royalty. The best-known Sphinx in Egypt is, of course, the colossal one at Giza, adjacent to the Great Pyramids.

The Temples of Karnak and Luxor

The temples of Karnak and Luxor are located within the ancient city of Thebes and date back to the second millennium BC. They are not just temples but large religious sites and today they are open-air museums, hugely popular with tourists. The Theban complexes are among the largest in the world and played an important role in the religion of Ancient Egypt.  It is believed that the recently discovered sphinx is the first unearthed in Thebes and one of the most significant finds in the city since the discovery of a tomb in 2014.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

Zodiac candle– A candle representing ‘your intent in your astrological house’                            (please refer to the chart below)                                                                                   Note: if you do not have a colour representing your intent in the candle please just inscribe on the candle the symbol of your zodiac

Orange candle– to represent change

Dark or black candle– to protect against and send away ill luck

Essential oil of your choice: such as rosemary, thyme, frankincense.                             Note: if you don’t have any essential oils you can use olive oil.

Incense of your choice- to burn before, during and after the ritual. Please light this while you are preparing your sacred space to neutralize the energy.

Note: Pillar candles or smaller round candles are required in order to allow them to burn within a reasonable time. The candles need to burn all the way. If there is any wax left, please ensure you give this to the Great Mother by placing in the earth. (Natural candle wax is best for this).

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Please refer to the chart that I have compiled indicating the corresponding colours and the intent for your particular Zodiac. Please take the time to go through this useful chart. It will be of great assistance for future reference.

COLOURS AND THE ZODIAC

The theme is- Instigating Change:

The Witches’ Alchemy is powerful indeed.

Please use this time to master the frequency of tuning into your spiritual practice to instigate the changes necessary for your development as a magical practitioner.

During the Solstice that is coming up in the next week or so, the veil will be thin, allowing better communication between the worlds. Doing this work during this full moon will allow your frequency to better shift to the energies of the Great Mother and Father.

Your Sacred Space:

Take care to prepare your sacred space before the ritual, if you are unable to burn incense, please use the power of intention such as a white light showering you and your surroundings. Ensure that you have all that you need at hand. The more prepared you are, the more effective the spell. Go through the check list of things that you need above, do this just before the ritual begins.

You can look in your astrological house and decorate your space with the colours representing the intent that you would like to illuminate and instigate change.

Decorate your altar with sprigs of Rosemary for extra protection.

The Ritual Explained:

Tonight we will be honoring the Great Goddess of the Strawberry (June) full moon. Elementally the strawberry is linked to water and connected with Venus, Freya and Aphrodite making it appropriate for out transformation.

MONDAY is the day of the MOON- this will increase the energy of the spell work for the Full Moon Ritual.

The moon is positioned at 25 Degrees in Sagittarius. This brings a dynamic and expanding approach to our spiritual practice in our lives helping us to propel ourselves forward.

Ruled by Jupiter this energy of change and expansion is magnified, so it’s a wonderful time to make the most of it.

Stationary Neptune will become retrograde after this time magnifying the planets power. This makes it a wonderful time to concentrate on a devotion greater than yourself.

Herbs: A – Z List (The Medicinal, Spiritual and Magical Uses of…)

Herbs

The following information is for reference only. Herb-lore is an art which must be respected, and several herbs can be as equally dangerous as beneficial if not used correctly.

  • Aloes:

General: Aloes are indigenous to East and South Africa, but have been introduced into the West Indies (where they are extensively cultivated) and into tropical countries, and will even flourish in the countries bordering on the Mediterranean. The drug Aloes consists of the liquid exuded from the transversely-cut bases of the leaves.

Medicinal Use: The drug Aloes is one of the safest and best warm and stimulating purgatives to persons of sedentary habits and phlegmatic constitutions. An ordinary small dose takes from 15 to 18 hours to produce an effect. Its action is exerted mainly on the large intestine, for which reason, also it is useful as a vermifuge. Its use, however, is said to induce Piles. From the Chemist and Druggist (July 22, 1922):

‘Aloes, strychnine and belladonna in pill form was criticized by Dr. Bernard Fautus in a paper read before the Chicago branch of the American Pharmaceutical Society. He pointed out that when given at the same time they cannot possibly act together because of the different speed and duration of the three agents. Aloin is slow in action, requiring from 10 to 12 hours. Strychnine and Atropine, on the other hand, are rapidly absorbed, and have but a brief duration of action.’

Aloes was employed by the ancients and was known to the Greeks as a production of the island of Socotra as early as the fourth century B.C. The drug was used by Dioscorides, Celsus and Pliny, as well as by the later Greek and Arabian physicians, though it is not mentioned either by Hippocrates or Theophrastus.

Spiritual Use: The word Aloes, in Latin Lignum Aloes, is used in the Bible and in many ancient writings to designate a substance totally distinct from the modern Aloes, namely the resinous wood of Aquilaria agallocha, a large tree growing in the Malayan Peninsula. Its wood constituted a drug which was, down to the beginning of the present century, generally valued for use as incense, but now is esteemed only in the East. The Mahometans, especially those in Egypt, regard the Aloe as a religious symbol, and the Mussulman who has made a pilgrimage to the shrine of the Prophet is entitled to hang the Aloe over his doorway. The Mahometans also believe that this holy symbol protects a householder from any malign influence. In Cairo, the Jews also adopt the practice of hanging up the Aloe. In the neighbourhood of Mecca, at the extremity of every grave, on a spot facing the epitaph, Burckhardt found planted a low shrubby species of Aloe whose Arabic name, saber, signifies patience. This plant is evergreen and requires very little water. Its name refers to the waiting-time between the burial and the resurrection morning.

Week 16 – Goddess Knowledge – Thetis

They is is a Greek sea goddess who represents fertility. She is a creator goddess, for all life begins in the sea, and she is usually portrayed as a Nereid (sea nymph): a beautiful, young semidivine goddess fond of dancing and singing. She helped raise the artisan God Heparstus and once provided sanctuary for Dionysus. Theroux is particularly known as a shape-shictrr: when Peleus desired to marry her, she transformed herself into fire, water, lion, and a serpent in order to escape him. As the personification of calm waters, They is is responsible for providing a peaceful sea. She is that center of peace and calm that is always available, even in the most of changing forms. She is a goddess who enjoys life’s pleasures.

The Myth Of Hades And Persephone

The myth of Hades and Persephone is one of the well known Greek myths.

Hades was the brother of Zeus and the god of the underworld.

Persephone was the daughter of Demeter, the Goddess of nature.

The myth of Hades and Persephone is one more myth of love and abduction in the Greek mythology.

Hades And Persephone: The Beginning Of The Myth

Hades fell in love with Persephone and decided to kidnap her. The myth says that in one of the rare times he left the Underworld, he traveled above ground to pursue her, while she was gathering flowers in a field.

One day Hades, God of the Underworld, saw Persephone and instantly fell in love with her.

Week 14 – Goddess Knowledge – Persephone

(This week I went through the deck to find this Goddess’ card because she is very important to why we have the warmer weather and a time when plants, flowers, trees, etc have time to grow into abundance for our food and herbs for magickal and medicinal needs. She is also important to why we have colder months when nothing will grow outdoors. This goddess is part of an ancient Greek tale that includes her mother, Demeter, and the god of the Underworld Hades. I will write posts with more information on Demeter and Hades which will follow after what the “Goddess Knowledge Card” has to say about Persephone.)

PERSEPHONE

Although Persephone is best known as Demeter’s daughter, the maiden who was abducted by Hades, lord of the underworld, the Greek version of her reflects the usurpation of female mysteries by a patriarchal mythology. In this version Persephone personifies the kore, the maiden aspect of the goddess. Her myth exemplifies the cycles of nature, for when Persephone is underground, plants do not bloom, and when she returns to earth, spring ensues.

Persephone is the goddess of the soul, for it is in the darkness of the underworld (analogous to the unconscious) that the soul is formed. In the Orphic mysteries, Persephone granted wisdom to the initiate, for she is the goddess of a dark, uncomfortable wisdom, a goddess of dark and frightening power. Persephone represents the ability to rule over the aspects of ourselves that are terrifying in the extreme.
