Understanding new moon

On the day of new moon, the moon rises when the sun rises. It sets when the sun sets. It crosses the sky with the sun during the day.

The image above is imaginary. It’s as if you flew in a spaceship to a place where you could see the night side of the moon. Why do we say imaginary? Because, when the moon is new, its night face is facing us on Earth … and we can’t see the moon at this time.

We can’t see the new moon from Earth, except during the stirring moments of a solar eclipse. Then the moon passes in front of the sun, and the night portion of the moon becomes visible to us, surrounded by the sun’s fiery corona.

NEW MOON in Capricorn January 9th 2016

First *NEW MOON* of 2016 is in Earthy Capricorn. She’s calling us to reach for our dreams and ground them into the physical plane, but reminds us that we must first embody our knowing. For that is where our truth and nectar lies.
The wisdom, the insights, and the understanding we receive are to be embodied within each one of us. While many are eager to share and teach what they learn as soon as they receive it, that is not what is being called of us.  We are to live with and practice what we are learning and that should be our central focus, our locus of devotion.

New Moon Oil

I decided I wanted to make a New Moon Oil today and in my research found the following:

This post first appeared on Starchaser and the article is located here:  http://www.starchaser-healingarts.com/essential-oils-and-lunar-phases-the-new-moon/

Essential Oils and the New Moon

When choosing essential oils for the New Moon and New Moon ceremonies, I look for those that release blockages and allow transition to take place; that cultivate openness, action and enthusiasm toward new experiences; and that calm and allay any reservations, fears or anxieties associated with change and the unknown. Fundamental to the choice is the context and the mental and emotional status of the person making the transition or participating in a New Moon ceremony. Some essential oils that I frequently select are:

  • Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum)
  • Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens)
  • Galbanum (Ferula galbaniflua)
  • Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
  • Jasmine (Jasinum grandiflorum)
  • Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha)
  • Nutmeg (Myristica fragans)
  • Orange (Citrus sinensis)
  • Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile)
  • Tangerine (Citrus reticulata blanco)

Cypress is a classic New Moon essential oil. It’s cleansing and grounding and creates a constructive atmosphere for evaluating choices. It’s particularly helpful with difficult or painful transitions because it instills inner strength and confidence, calms the mind and emotions, reduces anxiety and uplifts the spirits. Myrrh has many of the same attributes as cypress. It also unifies the chakra as well as the spiritual with the physical.

Tangerine and orange are also great choices. Both are uplifting and optimistic. They bring emotional vitality to transitions. Tangerine allows one to realize change without a great amount of anxiety, drama or trauma. Orange helps one detach from drama, expel negativity and feel confident and courageous. It releases negativity and draws in positive energy. Nutmeg is similar to tangerine and orange in that it creates enthusiasm and an appetite for adventure. It releases the old energetic, behavior and thought patterns that are no longer of service, and prepares one for the new. It creates a welcoming foundation. Galbanum sheds light on one’s life purpose and offers new perspective. Cardamom encourages openness and a thirst for new ideas. Ginger has a sharp, crisp fragrance like cardamon and it too creates drive and action and helps one overcome procrastination.

Several other essential oils may be appropriate where there is resistance to change. Jasmine, Frankincense (Bowellia cateri) and tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) create ease in transitions and reduce the fear and irritability that sometimes accompanies change. Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) promotes the flow of chi and encourages balance or rebalance following an adjustment.

Using the New Moon Essential Oil or Blend

How do you know that a New Moon is approaching? The New Moon is when there is no visible moon in the sky. The New Moon follows a Waxing Moon. There are two simple ways to determine if the New Moon is approaching.

  1. When the moon is present at dawn, the moon is waning a New Moon is approaching.
  2. When the moon’s dark or incomplete to on the right side and the moon is darkening from right to left, the moon is waning and a New Moon is approaching. The opposite is true in the southern hemisphere: the moon is incomplete on the left and darkens from left to right.

What Is a Supermoon ?

A supermoon happens when there’s a Full Moon or New Moon at the same time as the Moon’s closest approach to the Earth; perigee. It’s also known as Super Full Moon, Supoer New Moon and Perigee Moon.

The Next Super Moons

Year Date
2015 Sunday, September 27
2016 Monday, November 14
2017 Sunday, December 3

Because the Moon’s orbit around Earth is elliptical, thedistance from moon to Earth varies throughout the month and year. On average the distance is about 238,000 miles or 382,900 kilometers.

During a month, when the moon is closest to Earth it’s called perigee and when it’s farthest away from Earth it’s called apogee.

Moon Phases worldwide

When the Full Moon or New Moon coincides with being closest to Earth, or perigee, it is called a supermoon.

When the Moon is at the opposite end, farthest from Earth, or apogee, it’s called a Micro Moon.

Defining a Supermoon

There are no universal rules as to how close the moon must be to qualify as a supermoon or a micro moon. timeanddate.com uses the following definition:

  • If a Full Moon or new moon is closer than 360,000 kilometers (ca. 223,694 miles) at perigee, it is considered a supermoon.
  • If there’s a Full Moon or New Moon when the Moon is farther than 400,000 kilometers (ca. 248,548 miles) at apogee, it’s considered a Micro Moon.

Technical Name: Syzygy

The technical term for a supermoon is “perigee-syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system”. In astronomy, the term “syzygy” refers to the straight-line configuration of three celestial bodies.

Syzygy also happens during a New Moon and Full Moon, and sometimes when the Moon is close to the Lunar nodes of its path, it causes a Total Solar Eclipse or a Total Lunar Eclipse

Natural Disaster Trigger?

Although the sun and the moon’s alignment cause a small increase in tectonic activity, the effects of the supermoon on Earth are minor. Many scientists have conducted studies and haven’t found anything significant that can link the Super Moon to for example natural disasters.

According to NASA, the combination of the Moon being at its closest and at Full Moon, should not affect the internal energy balance of the Earth since there are lunar tides every day. There is a small difference in tidal forces exerted by the moon’s gravitational pull at lunar perigee. However, the difference is too small to overcome the larger forces within the planet.

Super Tides and Grativational Pull

Moon is Earth’s only natural satellite and the second brightest object in the sky after the sun. In synchrony with Earth, the moon spins at about the same speed and direction as it orbits around the Earth. This means that the same side always faces Earth, and the dark side of the Moon, the half of the moon’s surface which faces away, is never visible from Earth.

The tides on Earth are mostly generated by the intensity of the moon’s gravitational pull from one side of the Earth to the other. The Moon’s gravity can cause small ebbs and flows in the continents called land tides or solid Earth tides. These are greatest during the Full and New Moons because the sun and moon are aligned on the same or opposite sides of the Earth.
