Basil is the king of herbs. Here we enter the land of royalty in herb law. The word origins come from the Greek word meaning king or emperor.

A member of the mint family, basil is native and spread throughout the tropical regions from Central Africa to South East Asia. Its texture is tender with a pungent intoxicating aroma that is used in cuisines worldwide.

The Many Beliefs of Basil

The many beliefs about the herb ranged and ranges from, the ancient Greeks placing it in the hands of the dead to ensure a safe passage to the underworld. In India it is dedicated to the Gods Vishnu and Krishna. In ancient Egypt they would embalm their dead. In Mexico it is carried around for prosperity and wealth. Ancient Greeks and Romans believed that it was a symbol of malice and lunacy. Pliny a Roman scholar believed that it was an aphrodisiac, it was not only given to animals for successful reproduction but also used as an herb to welcome love among couples. Basil is also gifted to new homeowners and new business owners as it attracts prosperity.

Grow

Very easy to grow basil can be grown indoors on a sunny windowsill or outdoors in a sheltered sunny position.

Eat With

Tomatoes, goats cheese, Mozzarella cheese, lemon, eggs, mint, shellfish, lamb, chicken, raspberries, strawberries, figs.

Try

A few torn basil leaves over fresh raspberries is absolutely delicious. Add a handful of basil leaves when making strawberry ice-cream. Poach white peaches in sugar syrup and add a handful of basil leaves then serve with extra shredded basil. Make bruschetta- one of my absolute favorite as a snack with a beautiful glass of vino!

Heal

The volatile oils present in the herb has many healing properties. Used in a variety of culinary preparations some of the benefits of basil include:

  • Good for digestion– It fortifies the nervous and digestive system and can be good for headaches and insomnia. Assisting with the body’s acid balance it restores the bodies PH balance.
  • Anti-inflammatory- Eugenol, citronellol and linalool are the powerful essential oils that can help lower inflammation through their enzyme inhibiting properties. Consumption of basil could also soothe fever, headache, sore throat, cold, cough, flu. Its anti-inflammatory properties may help lower risk of heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel conditions.
  • Skin benefits– By applying as a facial mask
  • Mood disorders– Known as a hormone regulator
  • Liver support– assist with liver detoxification

Magick

As if the above is not magick enough. Here I will be briefly mentioning some of its metaphysical properties. According to Paul Beyerl, Basil is associated strongly with Dragon-like Basilisk and its contemporary association with the salamanders and dragons. It is used to invoke astral and mythological creatures. One can burn basil to invoke these creatures to assist in advice, inspiration and protection.

Basil has been planted upon graves and used as incense in the ritual of the dead. I suppose this goes back to the above mentioned ancient Greeks sending off their dead with basil in their hands.

One can use basil in a fertility spell work, to enhance psychic vision and used in a mojo bag for protection.

Celery

 

A Poem

The above poem is an understated description of the true talents of celery.

It’s an herbaceous plant from the parsley family that actually has a parsley like aroma with a pleasingly bitter taste.

Grow

Home grow celery is crispy, juicy and absolutely delicious!

You can grow celery from seed in soil that has a high level of moisture therefore you need to water frequently. This plant grows throughout winter and summer.

Eat

It is wonderful and juicy when fresh. You can have with chicken, pork, lamb, blue cheese, apples, nuts, cabbage, tomatoes, onions, potatoes and even rice, its just one of those great all-rounders.

Try

Add chopped celery leaf to potatoes or bean salads. Mix with tuna and mayonnaise for a sandwich filling. Cook celery leaf in tomato sauce to serve with pasta. Stir finely chopped celery into celeriac remoulade.

Heal

It can assist in reducing blood pressure as it contains phthalides which can lower stress hormones in the blood and reduce arthritis symptoms. It is known for its cholesterol reducing properties.

It also contains apigenin and has been praised for its properties as an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacteria, antiviral and antioxidant in Chinese medicine. It can be helpful for kidney problems cystitis and assist in neurogenesis (development of nerve cells).

Magick

The seed of the celery plant can be used to enhance visions. Drinking it as a divination tea to open up the mind and allow for better concentration. I love drinking this tea just before a tarot reading. Drink before bedtime to enhance prophetic dreams, this is one of the main ingredients in Psychic Vision Oil one used in traditional Conjure. You can make your own oil by infusing the seeds in a base oil such as almond oil. Mojo bags made with the celery seed are another way to carry the psychic vision with you, you can place these in your bag, in your pocket or under your pillow.

It is under the rulership of the Mercury, a planet that represents the mind, intellect and all forms of communication.

Marshmallow Root

This plant has been used as food and medicine in Africa for more than 2000 years.

The Greek physician Hippocrates valued it as a wound treatment because if it’s anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Grow

Slow growing plant that is to be sown in autumn, place in trays under a glass, simply recreate a small greenhouse. In spring they should be large enough to plant leaving 45cm between them.

Marshmallow flowers in its second year and develops roots a few years before it is harvested. With the flowers you could make flower essence, a beautiful energy medicine.

I will at some stage write up some basic information for how to make your own flower essence.

Try

In Roman time it was used to stuff sucking pigs. In the meantime if one is not at hand (lol) you could simply boil the marshmallow roots until soft, peel them and fry in butter. It makes a wonderful addition to any vegetable or even meat.

And my favorite…….

Herbal marshmallow Hot Chocolate:

  • 3/4 oz of Marshmallow root dried
  • 9 cups milk (raw is best!)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder (good quality)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Method:

  1. In a saucepan, heat up milk and marshmallow root. Allow to infuse for 30 minutes without bringing to a boil but still very hot. Once complete, strain out marshmallow root (if you did not use a tea bag or tea infuser) and return milk to hot saucepan.
  2. Add sugar, melt, and combine completely.
  3. Add cocoa powder and stir until completely combined.
  4. Add vanilla extract, combine well.
  5. Serve warm with homemade whipped cream or marshmallows . . . the big fluffy kind.

It’s that easy! Serve these delicious hot cocoa on cold winter days after playing outside in the snow, when fighting a cold, or just as a general respiratory health booster for you and your family!

Heal

The leaves are used in tinctures, capsules and teas. They can alleviate a sore throat and dry coughs that occur in the winter months. Teas are wonderful for indigestion, capsules may assist with digestive issues.

As a powerful mucilage plant Marshmallow works wonders in hot chocolate, the recipe is provided above.

Magick

Gathered beneath the full moon this herb can be used to encourage creative energy. As an herb for the dead it can be used for ancestral ceremonies or grown on the graves of the dead.

Burn the dried root to improve psychic abilities and protection.

This herb falls under the planet Venus. I have correlated magickal correspondences for this planet if you choose to use this root for its magick.

In this article I will be introducing the delicate yet highly aromatic dill.

Dill is a member of the Parsley family and not too distant relative of fennel. I often use the two interchangeably. Although it is indigenous to Asia, it is cultivated now all over the world.

Growing Dill

You can sow this seed annually in rich soil, sheltered from strong winds because of its delicate disposition. You can plant it next to cabbage or onions but NOT next to carrots as the dills root extractions can harm the carrots. Companion planting is always advisable in any garden.

Eat It With

It’s wonderful with smoke fish, seafood, lamb, beef, mushrooms, broad beans, cabbage, carrots, cucumber, potatoes, rice, sour cream, yogurt, eggs and paprika, to flavor pickles and wonderful in salads,

Heal

It is packed with Vitamin A and rich in Vitamin C. It can assist with insomnia, diarrhea, menstrual and respiratory disorders. It can boost your immune system and act as an anti-inflammatory. It is often mentioned in assisting with arthritis because of its anti inflammatory affects.

Try

Making Dill Butter: Beat plenty of chopped dill and a little lemon zest and juice into softened butter, shape into a log, wrap in foil or cling wrap and chill. Slice and serve on top of steak, lamb chops, fish or vegetables.

Magick

Because of its freshness and wonderful medicinal properties, when served up to your guests it can bring on a feeling of well-being.

Dill is an herb for protection it has been used to repel negative energies and black magick. It promotes clarity of mind and gives strength to reason. It’s also been used for falling prey to the beliefs of superstition. In the home and kitchen it can be used for protection and blessings.
