I got the idea for this ritual from Gregg Braden on his show “Missing Links,, Season 1 Episode 7.” He tells a story of a Native American asking him to go with him to “pray for rain”, they live in northern New Mexico where there has not been any rain in quite some time. When they reach his friend’s Medicine Wheel his friend steps inside of it for a few minutes and then comes out asking if Mr. Braden is ready to go to lunch. Mt. Braden is a little confused and asks his friend “David”, “I thought we were coming here to pray for rain.” To which “David” replies, “I was taught to see things are they would be when the rain fell. I could feel the mud squish between my toes coming out of my pleubo, to smell the cleaner air, to see things turning green and the crops in the fields growing. If we pray for something that is happening right now we get nothing but if we can see and ask for what it will be like after it rains than the rains will come.”
We are living in very uncertain times for all parts of our lives except the spiritual one. This is a time when we need to step up and use our spirituality and magickal abilities to help ourselves and others. The intention for the ritual in this Esbat gathering is to ask for healing mind, body, and spirit for everyone including yourselves anywhere upon Mother Earth and for Mother Earth Herself. Please try to keep your mind focused not on what is happening now but how we see things at the end of this COVID-19 virus. Yes, some things are hard to picture on a grand scale so keep it simple and see how you, your loved, and friends came through this virus strong and healthy. See you and/or your loved ones, and/or friends back to work. See all of you gathered together having a party of some kind to celebrate – remember in this age of being able to connect with people anywhere in the whole you could even do a Skype conference call party (Skype allows 50 people to be connected to each other at the same time).
So, for a little while at least set your worries and stress aside and join us in this Esbat celebration of how each of our personal lives will be at the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. The song I picked May The Circle Be Open is to remind us we may not be in a circle together all the time but there are ties that still bind us together so we are never truly all alone. We are going to do a healing drumming circle than at the end we will meditate for 2 minutes. Then anyone that wants to will have a chance to share their fears or stresses or where they see themselves and family at the end of the pandemic. There will possibly be a time limit set for each person sharing time depending on how many people join us in this gathering.
What You Need:
1 large white candle (that you can burn for 1 hour every day for 1 week. If you feel you want to keep lighting the candle after the first week then that is what you should do just make sure your candle is large enough for the duration you want to keep lighting it.)
Correct size holder for your candle
Your favorite Essential Oil for dressing the candle after engraving it
A device you can listen to the song (watch the video if you want to)
Something sharp to engrave you candle (a knife, your Atheme, a toothpick or a pin of some kind)
Fireproof Container to put the burning paper in
Lighter or Matches
I call to Archangel Raphael to reside in the Watchtower of the East to help protect those in this circle and when we leave it from any type of negativity.
I call to Archangel Michael to reside in the Watchtower of the South to help protect those in this circle and when we leave it from any type of negativity.
I call to Archangel Gabriel to reside in the Watchtower of the West to help protect those in this circle and when we leave it from any type of negativity.
I call to Archangel Uriel to reside in the Watchtower of the North to help protect those in this circle and when we leave it from any type of negativity.
I invoke Goddess Sirona (1 of the healing Goddess of the Celts) and God the Dagda (Celtic God of fertility, agriculture, life, and death.) to walk this circle with me three times three. To take us to a place that is not a place and an out of time as we know it. I bid you reside in our circle to help give strength and power to our work here.
Please click on this link to start the song setting your intention(s) of where you and those you care about will be feeling and doing after the COVID-19 pandemic has passed while listening to the song.
Now take approximately 5 minutes to write your intention(s) down on the piece of paper – How and Where you see yourself and those you care about feeling and doing once the danger of the virus is gone.
Next, inscribe the names or initials of the people on the paper you are doing this ritual for. When you are done with that take a small drop as needed of your favorite essential oil start at the bottom of the candle in one motion smear the oil to the top of the candle. Turn the candle clockwise and again apply the essential oil, repeat these steps until you come to where you put your first line of essential oil overlap the first and last applications.
Now light your candle. Burn the paper with the candle while visualizing how everyone included on the candle lives will be at the end of the COVID-19 pandemic in whatever country or state you all live in. Repeat this spell/prayer three times while the paper is burning: (If you feel a word or some words need to be changed to fit how you would say this spell or prayer you can do that as this is your plea and thanksgiving to your deity)
Sirona we ask for the health for those we have written here is strong and unaffected by COVID_19. Sirona we thank you that none we asked you to watch over became sick
the Dagda we ask that you keep us working from home or where we are employed or go to school. the Dagda we thank you for taking us through this time with being employed and/or in school that none of us lost anything we needed for home and hearth.
I see those on my candle as still being healthy, employed, and now able to go on with our daily lives. As we mourn with those far and wide who lost someone to this pandemic.

An Ode to Garlic
Oh Garlic, what homage
can we bring you
and your graced state
Packed tightly into
your little white dome
we want to break you open
and spread your cloves like
shining white pebbles onto
the shores of our meals.

‘Eat no onions nor garlic, for we are utter sweet breath, and I do not doubt but hear them say, it is a sweet comedy’
-William Shakespeare in a Midsummer Night’s Dream.
A wonderfully pungent herb that has been known for its ability to ward off vampires and the like, is considered a staple in many people’s diets around the world. My nona would always hang a big bunch of garlic by the door, mentioning it was to keep the bad eye out. As a child never really knew what that meant. I do now and a bunch of garlic is always hanging in my kitchen.
As a main feature in our culinary world, the humble garlic demands its presence in the medicinal home apothecary because of its numerous benefits. With all these wonderful components combined and its availability and accessibility garlic is renowned as a superfood and hailed for its healing properties since ancient times. Hypocrates the father of medicine swore by its healing properties, curing anything from infection to leprosy.
As a member of the Lily family, garlic is the cousin to onions, leeks and chives. It averages about 2 inches in height and consists of small separate cloves. There really is nothing like the taste of garlic. It stimulates the palate hitting it with a hot pungent and subtle sweetness. No wonder so many have written odes and poetry to this incredible plant. I hsve added some above.
A native to Central Asia garlic has been cultivated for over 5000 years. The ancient Egyptians considered it as sacred and was placed in the tombs of Pharos for the afterlife. It was not only the food of Kings and Gods but was also given to the slaves that build the Pyramids. Its known medicinal properties made garlic a valuable commodity in the world of labor. Healthy workers meant better productivity, better productivity meant advancements, better advancements made a strong, sustainable and superior civilization.
Propagate this wonderful hardy perennial or biennial by simply planting its coves in rich, moist soil that receives plenty of sunshine.
You can add garlic to pretty much anything that is savoury. Its addition will only benefit the dish and according to medical literature your health.
Garlic bread- by mashing a couple of cloves, add some chopped herbs to about 130g of butter. Make incisions in the bread roll or baguette, insert lavish wads of the buttery herbed garlic butter, wrap in foil, place in a hot oven and heat till butter melts approximately 15 min. Unwrap foil and allow bread to crisp in oven for a further 5 min and voila- done!
Garlic provides numerous health benefits including:
- Heart health support
- Anti-inflammatory properties
- Immune booster
- Reduces hypertension
- Stabilizes cholesterol
- Antibacterial and antiviral benefits
- Anti-cancer support
It can be taken as a supplement in both capsules and powder. Fresh is best though.
Medicine for colds and flu in the winter season
This may assist in relieving sore throats because of its antimicrobial action. I love using this when I feel like I may be coming down with something.
Combine 1 part Witches Brew- fire cider (recipe below) and 1 part Honey or raw coconut sugar. Honey is best know for its antimicrobial properties that has been used since ancient times.
Often seen as an herb of protection, garlic has been used in cleansing rituals, in legend and modern times especially against vampires. Now don’t just think as vampires as blood sucking monsters. Its an energy that can come in the form of anything from psychic to microbial, this is why vampires are usually connected to things such as insanity, disease and pestilence.
In ancient Greece it was placed upon a pile of stones at a crossroads to invoke Hekate. As a powerful amulet garlic will ward off any negativity and evil energy. Now, for those who worship the Goddess Cybele, as the herb is sacred to her, it is recommended that this herb is avoided. You can also substitute garlic for wolfsbane.
WITCHY BREW aka FIRE CIDER
Let’s have a look at a wonderfullly healthy immune boosting and delicious way to keep the vampires at bay with this classic recipe inspired by Rosemary Gladstar back in the 70’s. Offering protection against the unseen forces. Tweek it to your liking. This herb offers wonderful protection both on a spiritual energetic level and medicinal one. Never underestimate its a ability.
Mason Jar- any jar will do.
Organic (always best), raw, apple cider vinegar, this is also filled with probiotic goodness, balancing out the good microbes in your tummy.
3 or 4 cloves of garlic peeled and chopped
2 medium onion, peeled and chopped
1or 2 small bulbs of ginger, fresh, shredded. I must admit more is better for me anyway. This is a great anti inflammatory!
1 teaspoon brown and yellow mustard seeds. These also come in black which when making for protection is a good addition.
½ teaspoon hot peppers of your liking (this is optional). This really is the spicier the better.
½ teaspoon black peppercorns or cayenne pepper.
½ teaspoon horseradish root peeled and shredded, another great anti- inflamatory.
½ teaspoon combined herbs of your choice such as cinnamon, turmeric, and rosemary I love using thyme and oregano. All of these are also antimicrobial and anti inflammatory.
- Combine all the ingredients, fill a jar.
Pour the Apple Cider Vinegar over the contents to cover.
Cap, label, shake daily for a few weeks, storing in a cool, dark place.
Strain use cheese cloth or fine mesh fabric.
Pour into amber bottles and label for storage.
Use as a salad dressing ingredient, combine with oil, add to rice and other grains, I love this on steamed asparagus.
Take as take as a tonic especially during the winter months.
Shelf life is about several months. I love making this is small batches.
Most importantly please follow your doctors medical advice. The above information is general advice only and not to be in place of your usual medical treatment.

Basil is the king of herbs. Here we enter the land of royalty in herb law. The word origins come from the Greek word meaning king or emperor.
A member of the mint family, basil is native and spread throughout the tropical regions from Central Africa to South East Asia. Its texture is tender with a pungent intoxicating aroma that is used in cuisines worldwide.
The Many Beliefs of Basil
The many beliefs about the herb ranged and ranges from, the ancient Greeks placing it in the hands of the dead to ensure a safe passage to the underworld. In India it is dedicated to the Gods Vishnu and Krishna. In ancient Egypt they would embalm their dead. In Mexico it is carried around for prosperity and wealth. Ancient Greeks and Romans believed that it was a symbol of malice and lunacy. Pliny a Roman scholar believed that it was an aphrodisiac, it was not only given to animals for successful reproduction but also used as an herb to welcome love among couples. Basil is also gifted to new homeowners and new business owners as it attracts prosperity.
Very easy to grow basil can be grown indoors on a sunny windowsill or outdoors in a sheltered sunny position.
Tomatoes, goats cheese, Mozzarella cheese, lemon, eggs, mint, shellfish, lamb, chicken, raspberries, strawberries, figs.
A few torn basil leaves over fresh raspberries is absolutely delicious. Add a handful of basil leaves when making strawberry ice-cream. Poach white peaches in sugar syrup and add a handful of basil leaves then serve with extra shredded basil. Make bruschetta- one of my absolute favorite as a snack with a beautiful glass of vino!

A beautiful basil Pesto Humus
The volatile oils present in the herb has many healing properties. Used in a variety of culinary preparations some of the benefits of basil include:
- Good for digestion– It fortifies the nervous and digestive system and can be good for headaches and insomnia. Assisting with the body’s acid balance it restores the bodies PH balance. Our digestive system is a very important part of our immune system.
- Anti-inflammatory- Eugenol, citronellol and linalool are the powerful essential oils that can help lower inflammation through their enzyme inhibiting properties. Consumption of basil could also soothe fever, headache, sore throat, cold, cough, flu. Its anti-inflammatory properties may help lower risk of heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel conditions. Wonderful as a digestive.
- Skin benefits– applying as a facial mask by making into a paste with olive oil, or make your own basil oil, using a base oil of almond or olive, a bunch of leaves in a jar, top with base oil, seal, infuse for a few weeks, strain, ready to use.
- Mood disorders– Known as a hormone regulator. Drink as a tea.
- Liver support– assist with liver detoxification, awesome cleansing ability. Drinkbas a tonic. Tonic made by infusing dried basil leaves in a jar with spirits.
As if the above is not magick enough. Here I will be briefly mentioning some of its metaphysical properties. According to Paul Beyerl, Basil is associated strongly with Dragon-like Basilisk and its contemporary association with the salamanders and dragons. It is used to invoke astral and mythological creatures. One can burn basil to invoke these creatures to assist in advice, inspiration and protection.
Basil has been planted upon graves and used as incense in the ritual of the dead. I suppose this goes back to the above mentioned ancient Greeks sending off their dead with basil in their hands. I love using this herb as incense during Samhain.
One can use basil in a fertility spell work, to enhance psychic vision and used in a mojo bag for protection.
Last evening I became the grandmother to my 6th grandson bring my grand total of grandchildren to 9!! I was allowed to do his Wiccaning with in minutes of his birth so his ancestors are already watching over him along with my son and daughter-in-law also our large extended family.
I asked for prayers for my daughter-in-law (D-I-L) as she had to have an emergency c-section due do preeclampsia (women in the later stages of their pregnancy can all of a sudden develop high blood pressure that can be life threatening to mother and the child she is carrying) and gestational diabetes. As she was adopted she has none of her medical history background but I am not to worried about my grandson as my D-I-L has been healthy but a little overweight her whole life.
Please do not share this post with anywhere else due to a request from my son. Thank you.
Let me start by saying I am a certified veterinarian assistant and took extra courses to specialize in canine health and nutrition. I have worked with most breeds of dogs some my first in at age 14 to apprentice as a groomer and obedience training. After being a trainer for over 40 years I have found most humans needing training more than their companion….lol Check with your veterinarian before using the suggestions below to make sure it is ok to give to your familiar/pet. Lady Beltane and Coven Life are not responsible for any adverse effects these suggestions might have on your familiar/pet.
Now that the Northern Hemisphere is warming up any mammal you have as a pet and/or is your familiar just like us they need more water. But getting them to drink it is not easy. So years ago I came up with Pupciles. Now before I get comments and emails from vegetarian and vegan let me say to have a healthy canine or feline they have to have real meat in their diet without the nutrients near gives their body they will become sick. Felines and canines are carnivores not herbivores.
So if you do not eat meat or poultry ask someone you who eats meat to save you the juices in the pan after the meat has cooked, unless it was fried. You can buy ready made Chicken Broth but make absolutely certain it is Low Sodium. Never use any type of bullion or soup base mix as they are all extremely high in sodium. To much sodium for a feline or canine can cause kidney failure.
How to make Pupciles
For Warm Weather – For each 1 ounce/29.6 ml of the meat or poultry juice use 2 ounces/59 no of water. Stir well then put into an ice cube tray or a small containers that hold approximately 1/2 ounce/15 ml. Then place them into your freezer. Once they are fully frozen take them out of the ice cube tray or other container and store them in a zip lock freezer bag or other contains durable for the freezer. Then use your own judgement to give them a Pupcile. If you live in a hot climate or anytime I see your dog or cat panting in the heat give them one. The size measurements are for small dogs under about 20 pounds/600 grams. Do not adjust the ratio of 1 part meat juice to 2 parts of water. Felines and canines only sweat through their tongue by panting. In the warm weather you need to watch for signs of them over heating and economy dehydrated. The most common signs are heavy panting, being lathgic, If I up their top lip if the gums are light pink to white this means your pet/familiar is getting dehydrated which means their entire body is over heating. Just like humans any mammal can get heat exhaustion or have a heat stroke. If you think this is happening within fur baby call you veterinarian immediately. Also move the animal to a cooler place, place a towel that is wet will room temperature water, and offer them cool not icy cold water. Upon reaching your vet explain in detail what is going on with you fur baby and what steps you have taken to help cool it.
For Cold Weather – Make the Pickles as above. When I come in from a walk or your familiar has been outside playing just put one or two Pupciles in the microwave for about 20 seconds or until the melted as time will vary because of Pupcile size and/or microwave strength. For those who prefer not to use a microwave I suggest you take 2 servings of Pupcile out of the freezer place them in a bowl to melt and then warm them to approximately 99 degrees F/ 37 degrees C. Make sure to check theirs eats and the pads of the feet for any discoloration as it cold be the start of frost bite. If you see this call your vet immediately explain in detail how long your fur baby was outside, the location where the discoloration is, the color and size of it. What to can do until you talk to your vet is wrap your fur baby in a warm blanket and off it something warm to drink such as melted Pupciles. Take one or two of the premade ice cubes out, place them in a microwave-safe bowl most microwaves can be set between 20 and 30 seconds for the ice cubes to melt. Make sure the liquid will not burn your beloved familiar’s mouth and then give it to them to drink.

The Hymn to Health (Hygeia)
(Fumigation from Manna)
O Much-desir’d, prolific, gen’ral queen,
Hear me, life-bearing, Health, of beauteous mien,
Mother of all; by thee diseases dire,
Of bliss destructive, from our life retire;
And ev’ry house is flourishing and fair,
If with rejoicing aspect thou art there:
Each dædal art, thy vig’rous force inspires,
And all the world thy helping hand desires;
Pluto life’s bane alone resists thy will,
And ever hates thy all-preserving skill.
O fertile queen, from thee forever flows
To mortal life from agony repose;
And men without thy all-sustaining ease,
Find nothing useful, nothing form’d to please;
Without thy aid, not Plutus’ self can thrive,
Nor man to much afflicted age arrive;
For thou alone of countenance serene,
Dost govern all things, universal queen.
Assist thy mystics with propitious mind,
And far avert disease of ev’ry kind.
Pluto– refers to the God Hades, He was the God of the underworld. This is where those who died from ill health went to sent by Hygeia herself .
Manna– is a type of resin, the sap from a tree. Various sources describe it in the bible and in the Torah as a food sent from the ‘God’ that was given to the Israelite’s. In this instance it is the resin from an Ash tree. You can also use Frankincense from the Boswellia tree.
So who was the Goddess Hygeia?
This hymn is dedicated to the Goddess of Health, in Greek called Hygeia.
It’s where the word hygiene derived from in the English language.
Her father was the great God of health Asclepius holding a staff with the serpent wrapped around it. Till this day his staff is still used as a medical symbol all over the world.
The symbol of Goddess Hygeia is reserved for pharmaceuticals. It is the chalice with the snake wrapped around it.
The Caduceus that is mistaken as a medical symbol is actually the symbol of the God Hermes. This trend began in the US in the 19th and 20th century.
Hermes was the God of commerce, travel and messages. He was especially popular in the underworld, heralding messages back and forth from the underworld, to the middle world and the upper worlds.
The serpent as the healer has been used throughout time in various cultures and religions across the globe. It was believed that the poison from the serpent in certain doses could be used as medicine.
In fact these ancients were not too far from the truth. Modern science is discovering that venom from snakes and spiders can treat anything from cancer, nervous disorders to blood pressure.
Now I’m sure I don’t need to mention that PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. Science has devised a way of extracting and converting this venom to be conducive to our health, otherwise it is toxic and lethal.
But what you can try is this beautiful prayer to the Goddess of health Hygeia Herself imploring her powers and assistance to support you and your loved ones in times of need.
May the Goddess Hygeia Bless You.
After many millennia the Greeks still mention her name, before and after a meal, at leaving and arriving. Στην υγειά μας! (Stin igia mas!) -Translating to our Health- or Our Goddess of Health.
Ancestral Medicine is practiced globally and has been throughout time. It’s a healing that allows us to get in contact with our past and recent ancestors in order to heal old wounds.
This is root wisdom at its best. It is a spiritually grounding process that allows you to repair, heal, connect and nurture relationships with your ancestral wise ones.
Healing is a very important aspect of your entirety as a person that assists in your spiritual, magickal and of course your earth walking journey that surrounds you with loved ones, colleagues and acquaintances.
This type of healing process is important as it assists in clearing emotional and energetic patters created by previous generation.
So take the time to revisit your ancestors, make peace with them and allow the flow of energy to be one that is beneficial in your life. Resolve any emotional wounds, unresolved conflict, damaging judgement and other limitations to help you move forward.
Such imbalances or ‘road blocks’ can impede on your life where it interferes with your health, finances, relationships and the list goes on.
A wonderful time for Pagans to do this is on Samhain, however any time is the best time. Every full moon you also have an opportunity to release any energetic patterns and partake in Ancestral healing.
