Written for Coven Life

Pictures from the National Hellenic Museum Athens, taken 2019.
Above is a wonderful display of ancient Greek ritual objects used by the priests and priestesses of the ancient Hellenic, Minoan and Egyptian world.
Nothing more connects me to my magickal ancestors than when I visit the museums of Europe, this one is in Athens. 2000BC Couldrens, drinking cups, ritual containers no wonder I am drawn to the craft.
Magick was part of their everyday life. Temples were overflowing with devotees and ritual of daily devotion. Magick has become part of my daily life too, the only difference is my temple has become the Great Earth Mother or Gaia as the Ancient Greeks knew Her.
When I visit these great temples, to me they are a place of devotion, to most a place of amusements and to others a place of mysteries long past.
What on earth is that thing on the bottom left photo?

Ow yes, you could only imagine.
Archaeologists can only speculate. They described it as a complex vessel with recipients, a ritual Item for multiple offerings. I seem to remember cup like holes although you can’t see it here. This one was found in a temple where the Elusynian mysteries to Demeter and her daughter Persephone were dedicated to. Such rituals were so secretive that no one really knew what went on then let alone now. Most of their potery that the priestesses and priests used was comissioned by craftspeople dedicated to making sacred ritual objects for temples only. The mysteries were as much of a mysterie to the ordinary person then as they are now. This one dates over 2600BC!

I was thinking it was a kind of multi-cup thing. Must have been fascinating to see all those artefacts anyway.

It is fascinating, I have been visiting these places since I was a child. The temples and artifacts have been my inspiration, my gauge and my compass to my spirituality.
I’ll try and post more of these wonderful artifacts in the near future.
Blessed be.
