Let’s Have Some Fun

I know some of you are starting the colder months but others of us are in the middle of a very hot summer. So I thought we could all use a couple of good old fashion belly laughs remembering a positive, wonderful day from our childhood. I feel my mom looking over my shoulder ask me, “So which one are you going to choose?”

My day to want to remember for today happened about 14 months after my dad crossed into the Summerlands and I had just become a teenager. My mom’s youngest sister and her family lived on her husbands family’s farm, they have 3 daughters. Also, there were my mom’s brother’s children, the oldest had 3 boys and a girl, my mom’s other sisters children who have 2 girls and 2 boys. So a great coming together of cousins. I should add in here that the only adults in the house all day to choral us children ranging from I think 7 to 13 years old were my mom and aunt. This particular day was the third in a row that it was raining and all 12 of us children were really bored, so the “grown-ups” pulled out some board games and since there were so many of us to play they decided we were going to play Go to The Head of the Class (anyone else remember this game?). They divided us into 2 teams of various ages and we proceeded to play the game like the more modern Trivia Pursuit because there were not enough makers for going around the broad for each of us to have one. In no time at all with Kool-Aid and cookies passed out, we started playing with my mom and aunt taking turns asking the questions from the cards. A question at the 3rd-grade level (which here in The States the child is approximately 9 years old) was “What tree only grows on the Southeast corner on the island of Aruba?

My challenge to you if you decide to pick up the gauntlet is without using an internet search (this was a day in 1971 when most schools or companies or governments did not have computers at all and if they had one it was more of an electric typewriter and calculator) tell me the name of the tree in the comments. I will post the answer tomorrow. Please also share fun and/or exciting childhood memory with us and leave us a challenge to go with it if you want to.

Week 26 – Goddess Knowledge -Hel

Hel is the Norse queen of the underworld, a mother goddess in her underworld guise. She rules over a firey womb of regeneration and is especially responsible for those who die of disease or old age. Her underworld, unlike the Christian hell, which received its name from her, is simply an otherworld, a place of renewal rather than a place of punishment and misery. When northern shamans visit her realm, they put on a helkappe, magic mask (sometimes a helmet) that renders them invisible. It is possible that the masked harlequin, a standard character in commedia dell’arte, was originally one of the kindred of the goddess Hel. Hel is an embodiment of the divine mystery, a challenge to look behind the mask of appearances to see things as they really are.
