An Easy New Year’s Day Ritual for Goal Setting

This ritual is for setting attainable goals over the next calendar year. Say it is a large goal like saving a $1,000.00 dollars; break it down into smaller steps say like saving $20.00 per week so it does not seem so overwhelming. Smaller goals like say buying or finding a new wand; set a date you think it is possible for you to get it by and then do not sweat if you do not get it by that date but a few weeks later. You still have achieved that goal for 2016.

What You Will Need:

1 Clean sheet of paper

Something to write with

Heatproof container

Matches or a Lighter

Normal Altar set up

Arrange your altar as you normally would leaving enough room in the center to place the heatproof container. Have the paper and pen placed somewhere on the altar so you can write on it after you have closed your sacred circle.

Now that your altar is ready to go – Close your circle the way you always do. For those of you doing a circle for the first time

For those of you doing a circle for the first time: Walk in a clockwise way using your Wand, Atheme or just the Index Finger of your power hand (the hand you write with), you will walk the perimeter of the circle three times making sure it is large enough to move around your altar easily. While walking chant, “I cast this circle three times three to protect anyone within it and anyone outside it.”

After your circle is cast write down one to three goals you want to set for yourself for the calendar year 2016. Think about what you write down before writing it to make sure it is an attainable goal so you do not set yourself up for certain failure or give up on it part way through the year.

When you are done writing your goals out. fold the paper in three, then light it. Make sure to drop it into the heatproof container way before there is any chance of you or something else getting burned. While the paper burns recite this spell three times:

Lord and Lady help me to achieve my goals I have set for me.

Let this be a year I can accomplish what I set out to do for me.

So mote it be (or whatever words you use to seal a spell)

Let the paper burn completely to ash. Then open your circle as you usually would.

For those of you who have not done this before: Walk counter-clockwise three times around the circle again pointing with your Wand, Atheme, or Index finger on your power hand while saying, “My magic is done the circle is broken. MAy nothing I have done here hurt myself or others.”

All ashes and heatproof container to completely cool off then take it outside. Toss some into the Air to let the Universe take it and the rest on the ground to seep into Mother Earth. These things will help strengthen your spell and resolve to reach the goals you have set.

One more time make them attainable goals remember if you set your goal too high your could be asking for it to fail.

The Four Quarters or Corners

In This Article:  What are the Quarters?  •  How are the Quarters Called?  •  Deosil vs. Widdershins

What are the Quarters?

The ‘Quarters’ often refer to the elements of nature that are forces honored by Pagans and Witches. They are named many things, but you will often hear them referred to as corners, quarters, Watchtowers, elements, Elementals, etc. All of these related titles have different meanings and represent different forms of energy.

As with nearly everything in the Craft or in Paganism, these forces are seen differently by each individual. This is a general explanation of what they are and how they are ‘called’. Above all else, research and explore all the opinions you can acquire, but remember that you are your own best teacher and there is no substitute for personal experience.

Many people feel that the pentacle represents the four elements, with the practitioner, the divine, ‘spirit’, ether, or akasha residing above the rest as represented by the top point. This demonstrates how the Witch, or the divine within the practitioner, guides the elements or forces. This is just one interpretation of the pentacle or of how elements are viewed in relation to the Witch.
